As I was checking on our newly planted garden for this year, I stumbled upon some bushes with berries. Actually I know very well that the bushes were/are there: lined up along the side of our fence, they stretch out their branches in all directions. My husband cut them back last year because they were getting out of control. I don't know what kind of bushes.
Last year, there were no berries, just leaves and lots of them. This year? Lots of berries, hence the stumbling. The only thing is, I'm not sure what type...poisonous? edible?. I looked up various plants on the internet, finally deciding on a Mulberry Bush/Tree.
And although I tell my children never to eat an unknown berry, I broke my own rule and popped a few into my mouth. No bad side effects. I'm still here to write this blog. The berries are sweet and slightly perfume-y. Not super sweet like a good juicy blackberry, but sweet enough. And free! I think tomorrow would be a good day to go picking. That is, if the birds don't beat me first.
Mulberries are my favorite. I wish I had a bunch of bushes in my backyard; we had them when we were growing up. Thanks for stopping by my blog!!

Mulberries are deliciously edible! I first ate them in Hamden.

looks yummy! i found some volunteer mushrooms in our backyard, peeking out from under my studio -- they look like morels, my absolute favorite, but i definitely know better than to eat strange mushrooms! i did go and peek at them repeatedly, though...

All multi-lobular berries (like raspberries, mulberries, blackberries) are edible, except white varieties. until we moved to the pacific northwest, i had no idea that there were things like thimbleberries and salmonberries and so many more - all edible and yummy in their own way!
Yay for summer berries!
