We were graced with an overcast day and a good report from the local berry farm, so off we went, taking a day off from school on Friday and driving the half hour to pick warm fresh strawberries to our heart's delight!
The five of us made short time & we came home with 2 of these boxes, brimming with goodness.
But what to do with ALL of these lovely red gems? I pulled out my canning pot and paraphernalia, the pectin and sugar, the jars with their brand new lids. All was set. Being that it was my first time at attempting jam (other than freezer jam), I was a little nervous. I wanted to try something a little more unique from this book or this one, or this one, but again, since I never made jam from scratch, I chose a basic recipe with gobs and gobs of sugar for each batch.
Four hours and 21 half pints later, I think they turned out pretty well. And that's not all. Our freezer is well-stocked with freezer jam that my daughter made and lots of whole berries for future smoothies!
Now I'm thinking peach or blueberry... hmmm...
